Another feather in Mary's Cap : WP to see a new judge on the line soon

The Western Province is about to see a new judge candidate on the line. Mary van Wyk (RW) started archery in the UK in 2003, joining her husband on the line. She quickly realised the challenge and fun of the sport and particularly enjoyed the social aspects of shooting. Mary Obtained her ‘bowman’ status and shot for the county (Middlesex) both indoors and outdoors while also taking on Cranford Archery Club secretary and child protection officer posts. Mary earned 6-gold-end status, several FITA stars as well as roses (imperial equivalent of stars). At an archery improvement course at Lilleshall National Sports Centre, she became more interested in the coaching aspects of the sport, leading up to a level 2 archery coaching course and working with the youth. In 2008, Mary and her husband emigrated back to SA and joined the Belville Archery Club. "I am looking into a way back into the sport which does not require hours of practise! I am hoping that judging will allow me this opportunity and will be another feather in my archery cap!"

SA public get to decide on Olympic Games gear for opening ceremonies

Following the successful voting of Chukuru as Team South Africa’s mascot for the 2012 Olympics and Paralymic Games and beyond, the nation has now been invited to help choose the official kit that South Africa will proudly wear at the Opening Ceremony for this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in London. South Africa’s Olympic governing body SASCOC sent out a tender to the top fashion designers around the country for proposals to design the kit. Criteria for the creation of the designs were that the outfits must be proudly South African, for males and females (two separate garments if required), as well as being comfortable.
The nation’s fashion houses responded extremely well to the task and more than 20 designers submitted entries, some of them entering more than one design. On Tuesday, 8 May a judging panel met in Johannesburg to trim the entries down to a maximum of six designs. Among the judging panel were Miss South Africa Melinda Bam, retired soccer ace and Team South Africa Ambassador, Lucas Radebe, former athlete and also a Team SA ambassador Geraldine Pillay, television personalities Robert Marawa and Carol Tshabalala as well as fashion expert Grant Blackbeard. Also having their input from the current crop of sports stars were 2008 Olympian and 2012 Olympic Games qualifier Rene Kalmer (marathon) and wheelchair tennis player Lucas Sithole.

The following six outfit proposals were chosen from those submitted:

Colleen Eitzen
Craig Native
Gert Johan
Gina@Work
JJ Schoeman
Leigh Schubert

Each and every South African is now invited to have their say to choose a Proudly SA outfit to be worn at the opening ceremonies in London.

The public will shortly be able to vote on-line through the YOU, Drum, Huisgenoot, SuperSport and SABC websites. They will be able to vote through the medium of SMS lines until 18 May 2012 and the winning design will be then be announced on 21 May at the Paralympic Games 100-day countdown in Cape Town.

The opening ceremony of the Olympics and Paralympics are spectacular occasions, watched by billions of people around the globe and South Africa will be hoping to wow the world with their Proudly South Africa fashion statement.

Rhino mascot : Highlighting the plight of real rhinos

SASCOC News: The South African public voted Chukuru as their favourite in the mascot race. The name chukuru is a Southern African word for rhinoceros, in the Setswana language. The Sascoc mascot features the five colours of the Olympic rings around its horn, but fittingly these are also the colours of the South African flag. The cheerful animal was designed by the Johannesburg-based Mortimer Harvey advertising agency, and saw off competition from over 100 entries to make it to the final six and then claim top spot, winning by a margin of 233 over its closest rival.
“We knew, straight away that this was a-once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said designer Vanessa de Castro. “It was a chance to create something that would represent our Olympic team and the hopes and pride of the entire country. It doesn’t get better than that.” Codesigner Prudence Tshikalange was elated, saying that the design team was “honoured and humbled”. Mortimer Harvey also hopes that the national sporting mascot will raise awareness about the poaching crisis affecting real-life rhinos. With almost 160 animals already killed for their horns in South Africa alone in the first quarter of 2012, and reports of even rhino exhibits being vandalised for the horns, there is a growing worldwide call for toughter action against and harsher punshment for poachers.
