Archery at Old Grays Club in the Free State

Great things are happening in the Free State, with the development of the Old Grays Archery Club and the ongoing initiatives to build the club to the extent that it can host national championships.

The shooting range is starting to take shape. We are in the very fortunate position to be on Municipal grounds, part of Old Grays club (Old Grays is the oldest rugby club in Bloemfontein).

We had quite a few expenses to get started. We had to put up a fence of 160m (at a cost of R11,000) which was partly sponsored. We also boast a new but modest club house which was erected at a cost of R3000.

Further infrastructure costs have had to be put on hold as club funds are exhausted.

There are still so many things that we need to do, but lack the funds to do so. We realize that we are not the only club in the Free State, but we are surely the biggest with over 40 active members.

Limited Equipment

Club equipment is limited, with one Recurve bow. Prof. Ockse coaches the Recurve archers on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. The club is preparing for the possibility of hosting a large indoor event.

There is still much to do before we can host an event like Nationals but plan to be ready in two years. We are quite capable, having hosted the Free State cricket field in 2006 and the rugby field last year.
